SN MT50 is based on tributyrin, a neutral and chemically stable ester composed of butyric acid and glycerol. Tributyrin is rapidly hydrolyzed by pancreas and gastric lipases to glycerol and 3 butyrate molecules in the proximal intestinal tract and monobutyrin due to high solubility in the water can reach the distal part of the intestine where the liquid are adsorbed. Experimental studies show an intact tight junction protein network in the ileum, proximal colon and jejunum; a sign of a healthy intestinal morphology. Since antibiotic usage can cause profound changes in gut microbiota, it is likely that there is a consequential reduction of butyrate produced in the GI tract; for this reason the administration of SN MT50 serves as primary energy source, promotes growth of epithelial cells and trans-epithelial resistance and consequently reduced permeability. In general, SN MT50 has a positive effects on the control of the inflammation through the immune response with the regulation and the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

SN MT50 shows a particular chemical behavior; it is hydro-dispersible and as a self-emulsifying compound.
